It is also a fine illustration of period architecture by the noted Boston firm Hartwell & Richardson. It retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship and setting.","narrative":"Completed in 1890 at 23 Main Street in Andover, this three-story brick building was designed by the Boston firm Hartwell & Richardson and built by the local contractors Hardy & Cole. It replaced an earlier Federal-style brick bank on the same site, which had housed the Andover National Bank since its founding in 1826. When it opened, the building held two banks on the first floor, an insurance company and professional offices on the second, and a Masonic lodge on the third. Its plain, boxy form is enlivened by varied surface brickwork and tiered windows: plate glass storefronts, paired rectangular windows, then tripartite arched windows at the top. These changes reflect the different functions inside and echo larger urban skyscrapers in an abbreviated way. Its height and scale give it a commanding presence on a low streetscape. It was listed for its role in Andover's late nineteenth century commercial growth and as work by a noted architectural firm.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect: Hartwell & Richardson of Boston; builder: Hardy & Cole (local contracting firm)","architectural_style":"Commercial Romanesque Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in commercial use as a bank; storefronts were altered in the 20th century, and a modest addition was planned in 1982 that retains the original building.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.807918-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/97/7898/63789897/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/82001907.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001907/20d795c61f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001907/20d795c61f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Andover_National_Bank_Building,_Andover_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Andover_National_Bank_Building,_Andover_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789897","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andover_National_Bank","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4754621"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/andover-national-bank-82001907/"}
