It retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship and setting.","narrative":"This two-story clapboard farmhouse at 31 Lowell Street in Andover dates to about 1809-1810. Jeduthan Abbot Jr., a farmer, built it after buying 40 acres of mowing, tillage and woodland from his father, apparently to house his own growing family. The house has a hip roof, a five-bay facade with 12/12 windows, and a center doorway with leaded glass sidelights. An Ionic-columned portico with a roof balustrade and urns shelters the entrance, and the doorway was altered in the 1870s. Ownership passed in 1839 to Winslow Battles, a machinist, and remained with his descendants until 1950. That shift from farming families to a machinist's household is cited as evidence of mid-19th-century economic change. The house is also valued as a well-preserved example of Federal architecture in Andover, with its original design, materials, workmanship and setting largely intact. It remains a residence today.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; the form describes excellent preservation and a pristine setting.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.522015-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/5/7899/63789905/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/82001905.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001905/e03f5c091e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001905/e03f5c091e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AndoverMA_AbbotBattlesHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AndoverMA_AbbotBattlesHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789905","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abbot-Battles_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4664187"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/abbot-battles-house-82001905/"}
