It is described as Adams' best remaining small-scale brick mill from the early industrial period and an excellent example of mid-nineteenth century mill construction.","narrative":"Set on the west side of Grove Street in Adams, this former woolen mill is a group of five connected sections. The main building is a three-story brick structure with a four-story tower, slate window lintels and sills, and Greek Revival trim. A brick wing, a rubble stone section and later concrete and wood additions from the 1920s complete the complex. The site was first developed for water power in the late 1820s, when a cotton factory was built by the Mason brothers. Cotton goods were made here until the Civil War, and in 1864 new owners converted the mill to woolen manufacture. The Phillips family kept producing woolens until the early twentieth century, when the Adams Woolen Manufacturing Company took over. Production wound down between the 1930s and early 1950s, and the buildings became a storehouse. The mill was listed as the best surviving small brick mill from Adams' early industrial period and as a good example of mid-nineteenth century mill construction.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival style trim on the mid-nineteenth century brick sections","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Described as a former woolen mill, occupied and used as a warehouse, in fair condition and altered, with windows covered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.433356-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/90/7942/63794290/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/82001897.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001897/93a2bec1cb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001897/93a2bec1cb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AdamsMA_FormerPhillipsWoolenMill.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AdamsMA_FormerPhillipsWoolenMill.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794290","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phillips_Woolen_Mill","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7185946"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/berkshire-county/phillips-woolen-mill-82001897/"}
