It is a rectangular, 2½-storey wood-frame structure with a symmetrical five-bay facade, clapboard siding, a hipped roof and a central belfry. The entry, with pilasters, leaded glass side lights and a small pediment, sits beneath a palladian window. It was the first academy for secondary education in Berkshire County and drew students from across the region while Lenox served as county seat. The school later became a high school from 1866, then the Trinity School in 1911, and afterward housed town and private groups. Moved twenty feet south in 1880 to center it on an enlarged lot, it keeps its place in the town center. It is valued as a well preserved, small-scale, early wooden example of a typical New England academy form. The town has owned it since 1947.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899 (specific dates 1802-1803)","architect_builder":"Eldad Lewis","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Owned by the Town of Lenox since 1947 and listed as occupied; it has housed a variety of town and private organizations since the 1920s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.531085-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/68/7942/63794268/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/82001895.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001895/9e5adf23c1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001895/9e5adf23c1-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lenox_Academy,_Lenox_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lenox_Academy,_Lenox_MA.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100006987","name":"Lenox Village Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/lenox-village-historic-district-100006987/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794268","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenox_Academy","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6523153"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/berkshire-county/lenox-academy-82001895/"}
