Holt.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it the key landmark structure of Chase City. It grew in two stages alongside the town's change from the crossroads village of Christiansville to a colony of Northern settlers after the Civil War. The 1869-70 enlargement is attributed to Jacob W. Holt, whose ornamented Italianate wooden buildings are noted in the form.","narrative":"Shadow Lawn is a two-story, double-pile Italianate house on North Main Street in Chase City, Virginia. Its oldest portion dates to about 1834, when Richard Puryear, a leading citizen of the village then called Christiansville, built a home on his land. After the Civil War, George Endly, a Northern newcomer who later co-founded Chase City, bought the property in 1868 and had it enlarged. Builder Jacob W. Holt added the three-bay front section in 1869-70 and extended the center hall through the older house. The facade has a center gable with a pinwheel round window, bracketed eaves, a bracketed front porch, and round-headed windows. Inside, a central passage holds an open-string stair and Federal and Victorian mantels. In 1902 the house was sold to a mineral water company, which used it as a club house for a nearby hotel. The McKinney family has owned it since 1935. It stands on about half an acre, the remainder of the original estate.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Jacob W.
