It sits on a high brick foundation and has a low hip roof of standing-seam metal. Greek Revival details include a four-panel entrance door with sidelights and a transom, a one-story porch with square paneled pillars, and an extremely wide central hall with an open stair. Sally Ann McCoy and others bought the tract in 1857, and Thomas and Anna Preston acquired the farm in 1863. Union soldiers raided the house during the occupation of Charlottesville in March 1865. The farm was later subdivided, and the house became the manor house associated with the Preston Heights area. Charity Pitts ran a boarding house there for university students from 1930 until 1970. The building was then divided into four apartments, keeping most of its original fabric. Additions at the east side and rear reflect later changes.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular with Greek Revival details","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition listed as good; in use as a rental property with four apartments.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:58.159732-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/47/6786/41678647/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/82001816.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001816/cea325be67-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001816/cea325be67-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Strawser","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wynhurst_Charlottesviille_VA.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Strawser</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wynhurst_Charlottesviille_VA.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"84003523","name":"Rugby Road-University Corner Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/rugby-road-university-corner-historic-district-84003523/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678647","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wynhurst","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16903793"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/charlottesville/wyndhurst-82001816/"}
