It is also part of the last remaining commercial block on West Main Street. A reviewer noted it as a good example, with some storefront elements intact along with the upper story.","narrative":"Built in 1893 at 711 West Main Street, this two-storey, three-bay brick building was put up by A. N. Peyton on a corner of land bought from Sarah F. Culin. J. P. Ellington rented it for a dry goods store and bought it in 1901. A rear wing was probably added around 1896. The upper facade is covered in metal, with decorated pilasters, paired engaged Corinthian-style columns on tall pedestals, brackets and a modillioned cornice. The interior retains a patterned tin ceiling. Later uses included a bookstore in the 1930s, with the owner living upstairs, and an appliance business in the 1950s and early 1960s. At the time of the survey it served as a storefront church. The facade matches part of the larger Anderson Brothers Building, and the two are the only metal-clad facades left in Charlottesville. The building is also part of the last remaining commercial block on West Main Street, which is the basis for its listing.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Victorian","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition rated fair; in use as a storefront church at the time of the 1979 survey, with the display windows boarded up.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.054525-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/59/6786/41678659/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/82001811.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001811/b8a405375b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001811/b8a405375b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Strawser","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Peyton-Ellington_Building_Charlottesville_VA.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Strawser</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Peyton-Ellington_Building_Charlottesville_VA.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100001641","name":"West Main Street Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/west-main-street-historic-district-100001641/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678659","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peyton%E2%80%93Ellington_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15266100"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/charlottesville/peyton-ellington-building-82001811/"}
