It was the manor house of a 534-acre farm that now makes up most of northeast Charlottesville. Building took about four years. The land was once part of \"The Farm,\" granted to Nicholas Meriwether in 1735. The house is five bays wide and two stories high, with a hipped tin roof, end chimneys and a formal portico of coupled paneled columns. Blind windows on the north and south sides preserve the symmetry. Inside, a double pile plan, a double run stair and identical Greek Revival mantels are notable, and the high basement holds a rare set of double parlors, one used as a dining room. The original kitchen and smoke house still stand. During Sheridan's raid a regiment camped here. The farm was subdivided in 1876, and the mansion and five acres were sold in 1893. It is valued as a very late example of Georgian architecture and as the manor house of a large farm.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Georgian","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed in good condition and in use as a residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.397221-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/43/6786/41678643/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/82001808.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001808/497443cc62-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001808/497443cc62-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Nickmorgan2","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Locust_Grove.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Nickmorgan2</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Locust_Grove.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"08000066","name":"Jefferson, Martha, Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/jefferson-martha-historic-district-08000066/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678643","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locust_Grove_(Charlottesville,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15242610"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/charlottesville/locust-grove-82001808/"}
