It is presented as a fine example of a small Gothic cottage in the Victorian style. The reviewer noted that the significance was briefly stated but supported by a good description of the style's importance.","narrative":"This small Gothic Revival cottage at 1200 Carlton Avenue in Charlottesville is a three-bay, single-pile frame house of 1½ stories above a brick English basement. It has a steep bellcast gable roof with deeply projecting eaves, paired brackets at the corners, a high central front gable, and a bay window and entrance porch with bracketed cornices. It was built before 1886, probably between 1865 and 1885, on the Belmont farm of Slaughter W. Ficklin, who bought the farm in 1847 and lived there until his death. The cottage originally stood about two and a half blocks from the Ficklin mansion. After the farm was subdivided, the cottage passed to D.C. Carver and then to the Crawford family, who sold the land to the school board in 1929 and rolled the house two blocks downhill to its present site. It was modernized in 1969 and has been a rental home since. It is valued as a fine, distinctive example of a small Victorian-era Gothic cottage.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition is listed as fair; in use as a residential rental property.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.687278-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/33/6786/41678633/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/82001804.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678633","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ficklin%E2%80%93Crawford_Cottage","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15217646"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/charlottesville/ficklin-crawford-cottage-82001804/"}
