Its core dates to 1848, and the survey calls it the most important building on the University Corner. It also houses Anderson Brothers Book Store, the oldest business in the city still operating in its original location.","narrative":"Anderson Brothers Building is a three-story, seven-bay brick structure at 1417-1427 University Avenue in Charlottesville. William N. Roach erected a two-story brick building on the lot in 1848, and a bookstore has occupied at least one of its store rooms since 1852. The Anderson family took over the business in the 1870s and bought the building in 1886. The present building was constructed around the older one in 1891-92 and was later renovated and expanded in 1927, 1960, 1966 and 1970. Its front is clad in metal, with paired Corinthianesque columns on tall decorated pedestals, a massive parapet entablature, modillions, floral bands and plaques bearing the name ANDERSON BROTHERS. It is the largest building with a metal-clad facade left in the city, and its core dates to 1848. Anderson Brothers is also the oldest business in Charlottesville still operating in its original location, which makes the building a key landmark at the University Corner.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Victorian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as good; in use as a book store, with apartments on the upper levels.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.520983-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/55/6786/41678655/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/82001797.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001797/f855798ff8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001797/f855798ff8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Smash the Iron Cage","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Anderson_Brothers_Building,_Charlottesville.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Smash the Iron Cage</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Anderson_Brothers_Building,_Charlottesville.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"84003523","name":"Rugby Road-University Corner Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/rugby-road-university-corner-historic-district-84003523/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678655","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anderson_Brothers_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15181036"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/charlottesville/anderson-brothers-building-82001797/"}
