It is one of very few small Italianate stone houses surviving in Austin, comparable to the Twin Houses on West 14th Street. It also reflects the craftsmanship of Francis Fischer, who became a prominent Austin stonemason.","narrative":"Built in 1882 at 1008 West Avenue, this small one-story house of brick and cut limestone was constructed by Prussian-born stonemason Joseph Fischer and his son Francis, and served as both office and residence for the family. Its design is a subdued version of the High-Victorian Italianate style, with a symmetrical plan, low hipped roof, wide eaves on wooden modillions and brackets, stone quoins, and keystoned hood molds over the windows and door. Few small houses of this type survive in Austin; the nearby Twin Houses on West 14th Street are the main comparable examples. Francis Fischer later worked on the State Capitol, University of Texas buildings, the Austin Y.M.C.A. and a St. Edward's University building. The family kept the house until 1938. It later served as a residence, barbershop and bookstore before a 1979-80 restoration, after which it became professional offices. The front porch was removed and the rear porch enclosed.","period_of_significance":"1882","architect_builder":"Joseph and Francis Fischer","architectural_style":"Italianate (High-Victorian), with Greek Revival symmetry","criteria":[],"status_note":"Renovated, in excellent condition, occupied and used as professional office space.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:18.568093-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/50/9736/40973650/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/82001741.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001741/96dd936e18-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001741/96dd936e18-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jfischer06","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:FischerHouse1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jfischer06</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:FischerHouse1.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100010021","name":"West Downtown Austin Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/texas/west-downtown-austin-historic-district-100010021/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40973650","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fischer_House_(Austin,_Texas)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5454425"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/travis-county/fischer-house-82001741/"}
