It was a center of commercial and social life until its decline in the 1950s and 1960s. Its Renaissance Revival facades are described as unmatched by any other building in the city.","narrative":"Built in 1922, the Antlers Hotel is a large rectangular brick building of four stories and a basement at Washington and West Erie avenues in downtown Lorain, facing a small city park. Paul Rissman is named as architect. Tan brick, stone and terra cotta trim, and classical window detailing give it a Renaissance Revival character, and a balustered porch marks the main entrance. Inside were about 80 guest rooms, a lobby, restaurant, bar, kitchen, laundry, a two-story ballroom with stage and balcony, and an upper meeting room. The local Elks Lodge built it as a profit-making venture and as a home for its meetings. For decades it hosted dances, parties, club meetings and political rallies. New highways, motels and suburban shopping drew business away from downtown, and the hotel closed in the mid-1960s. It has since stood vacant, with a badly damaged interior, but its exterior remains intact and is regarded as the finest architecture in Lorain.","period_of_significance":"1922","architect_builder":"Paul Rissman","architectural_style":"Renaissance Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Vacant for about fifteen years; interior heavily damaged by vandals and weather, while the exterior remains intact and needs only cleaning.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.104321-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/82001470.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001470/8efe5e2f3b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001470/8efe5e2f3b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"N8hawk","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Antlers_2.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">N8hawk</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Antlers_2.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100007496","name":"Broadway Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/broadway-historic-district-100007496/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989803","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antlers_Hotel_(Lorain,_Ohio)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4775385"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/lorain-county/antlers-hotel-82001470/"}
