Large multi-bay Italianate buildings at this scale are uncommon, and the details extend along the side facade as well as the front. Its prominent corner location also makes it a pivotal building in the Over-the-Rhine streetscape.","narrative":"Standing at the northwest corner of 12th and Main streets in Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine neighborhood, this four-story Italianate building was constructed around 1871 by Theodore Krumberg to hold display and storage space for his dry goods business. It measures 25 by 100 feet, with a three-bay front and an eleven-bay side. The front has fluted cast iron columns with composite capitals, smooth sandstone walls, arched stone window lintels, bracketed sills and a bracketed cornice. The side wall is common bond brick. Later dry goods firms and a department store occupied it until 1929, and Provident Bank kept a branch on the first floor from 1930 to 1961. The original display windows and entrances were altered, though the cast iron columns and storefront frieze survive. It was valued as a rare large-scale Italianate building and as an anchor of a cohesive historic streetscape.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Theodore Krumberg","architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Occupied. The first floor has had various commercial uses since 1961 and the upper floors have recently been used as artists' loft spaces; rehabilitation was planned.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.501955-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/82001467.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001467/d5f9509615-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001467/d5f9509615-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":null,"credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:KrumburgBuilding.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown author</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:KrumburgBuilding.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988927","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_Krumberg_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7781872"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/hamilton-county/krumberg-theodore-building-82001467/"}
