It stands on its original site as the centerpiece of a historical park.","why_significant":"It is the only one of six remaining Chester Township schools never used for anything other than education. It is a relatively unchanged mid-nineteenth century schoolhouse and keeps the strongest link to the township's educational heritage. It conveys the appearance and atmosphere of an early district school.","narrative":"Built around 1847 at a crossroads in Chester Township, Geauga County, this brick schoolhouse measures about 32 by 23 feet and rests on a Berea Grit stone foundation. A half circle of stone over the door is its only ornament, and a bell sits on the front of the gable roof. Inside are a foyer, a cloak room, a supply room and a single classroom with desks of the original style. Known as Scotland School, it served pupils until 1926, when a central school opened and students were bused. Of six surviving township schools, it is the only one never converted to residential or commercial use. After being offered to the Chesterland Chamber of Commerce in 1972, it was restored between 1975 and 1980 and became the center of a historical park, joined in 1981 by the old Chester Town Hall. It represents the educational heritage of the township.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"No style characteristics","criteria":[],"status_note":"Restored between 1975 and September 1980, furnished as a schoolroom and used as a museum in a historical park; condition listed as excellent.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.938546-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/82001463.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001463/f7bac3e829-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001463/f7bac3e829-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jf1123581321","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chester_Township_District_School_No_by_Joseph_Frost.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jf1123581321</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chester_Township_District_School_No_by_Joseph_Frost.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988687","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138339968"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/geauga-county/chester-township-district-school-no-2-82001463/"}
