Its walls are coursed and squared limestone with quoins. Two street-facing doors have stone lintels and sills with transoms, and the windows are trimmed in stone as well. A gabled roof with returns and wide cornice boards completes the vernacular design. The building was part of an early effort to establish public schools in Sandusky. In October 1843, voters in the school district heard a motion from Eleutheros Cooke to form a committee to study building several schools. By February 1844 the committee had reported, and voters supported construction of three grade schools and one high school. This building served as a school for about 60 years and is the only one of those schools still standing. In the early twentieth century it housed Waldkircher's Pump Works, and one upper window was converted into a loading door. It sits in a block of mostly nineteenth-century vernacular buildings.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Exterior condition listed as poor in the inventory; the building is described as endangered by neglect.
