It served the children of the Seventh Ward, a neighborhood that grew up after the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern railroad station was built nearby.","narrative":"Osborne School is a two-story limestone school building at 922 W. Osborne Street in Sandusky, Ohio, dated to 1890 and designed in the Romanesque Revival style. It was built to educate children of the Seventh Ward, a neighborhood that developed after the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern railroad station opened nearby; many residents worked for the railroad. The building has rock-faced ashlar walls, corbeled stone cornices along the roofline, dripstone lintels over the windows, plain stone sills, and an arched entry with a transom and triple-paned arch. A hip roof covers the irregular plan, and a large addition was made in 1908. A steeple above the main entry and the dormers along the roofline were removed early in the twentieth century. It is one of several limestone schoolhouses built in Sandusky and was listed for its fine monumental limestone architecture. It sits on a shaded lot in a quiet neighborhood of small houses and remains in school use, with its condition described as very good.","period_of_significance":"1890","architect_builder":"George Feick (listed as contractor or builder)","architectural_style":"Romanesque Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still in use as a school, owned by the Sandusky Board of Education; interior and exterior condition listed as very good.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.561913-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/82001431.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001431/a52303fcfc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001431/a52303fcfc-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Osborne_School_in_Sandusky.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Osborne_School_in_Sandusky.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71984896","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137778990"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/erie-county/osborne-school-82001431/"}
