It has rock-faced ashlar walls, a hip roof with a gable, a basement and a rectangular plan, with an early rear addition. A bell tower with an arched opening and spindle railing rises above the front, trimmed with dentils and pilasters with arched panels. Twin arched entries face the street, small windows with looped stone decoration flank them, and the windows have stone lintels and sills. It was one of four limestone fire houses Sandusky built for horse-drawn equipment, and one of those has since been demolished. This station served the West End until a newer station nearer the western city limits replaced it. The building is valued for its long role in firefighting and as one of the large municipal limestone structures of its period. It stands on a triangular lot beside a busy route, and its exterior remains in good condition.","period_of_significance":"1906","architect_builder":"Shively and Son (architect or engineer)","architectural_style":"Vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Vacant and no longer used as a fire station; exterior condition is good and the building is owned by the City of Sandusky.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:15.080584-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/82001428.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001428/5aca3f4ae0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001428/5aca3f4ae0-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Engine_House_No._5_in_Sandusky.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Engine_House_No._5_in_Sandusky.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71984974","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No._5_Fire_Station_(Sandusky,_Ohio)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q60747688"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/erie-county/no-5-fire-station-82001428/"}
