The second owner, John Hudson, was a superintendent of the Mad River & Lake Erie Railroad.","narrative":"Built in 1853 at 318 Huron Avenue in Sandusky, this two-story Italianate house is constructed of limestone with plain ashlar walls, a hip roof with shingles and an above-ground basement set off by a water table. Brackets run beneath the wide eaves, the paired front windows have stone lintels and sills, and an ornate wooden oriel window with arches and brackets projects on the north side. Curving double limestone steps lead to a lighted main doorway and a simple porch with dentils and a wooden rail. Additions extend to the east and south. Dr. Ebenezer Lane, who had it built, worked with cholera victims during the 1849 epidemic and served as first secretary of the Erie County Medical Society. His father was a lawyer and Firelands pioneer, and his wife was the daughter of Sandusky's first doctor, George Anderson. John Hudson, a Mad River & Lake Erie Railroad superintendent, later owned it. Today the house contains apartments and stands across from a small award-winning park.","period_of_significance":"1853","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Presently used as apartments; exterior condition very good, with additions to the east and south.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.517095-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/82001417.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001417/03dbfdf9d3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001417/03dbfdf9d3-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ebenezer_Lane_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ebenezer_Lane_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71984886","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137777960"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/erie-county/lane-ebenezer-house-82001417/"}
