Market Street in Sandusky, Ohio, at the corner of Hancock Street. Built in 1884 in the Italianate style, it served as an early grocery with living quarters above. Samuel Facer, a mail agent, helped develop this part of Market Street, and a small waterfront park nearby was named for him. His family lived upstairs, and his daughter Fannie later became Sandusky's pioneer woman social worker. The building has an unusual structure: instead of cross beams, an intricate system of cast iron columns and sandstone beams is held together by the brick outer walls. Decorative features include painted zinc scrollwork on the facade, iron grillwork on the side and rear doors, an iron balcony on the east side, stone sills and lintels, and a slate-mantel fireplace in the store room. It stands one block from Sandusky Bay in a neighborhood being revived through restoration. It was recognized for both its architecture and its associations.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as a vacant store with apartments; interior and exterior condition are both rated excellent.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.033994-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/82001397.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001397/527d851480-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001397/527d851480-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Facer%27s_Store.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Facer%27s_Store.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100001899","name":"Downtown Sandusky Commercial Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/downtown-sandusky-commercial-historic-district-100001899/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71984980","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137771764"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/erie-county/facers-store-82001397/"}
