Market St., Sandusky, Ohio, built in 1915 on the site of an earlier brick engine house. Contractor was C. N. It replaced a brick station on the same site dating to 1891 or earlier, became fire fighting headquarters in 1913, and is the city's last remaining limestone fire station still in use.","narrative":"Built in 1915 at 901 W. Market Street in Sandusky, Engine House #1 is a two-story limestone fire station with a gabled shingle roof and rock-faced ashlar walls. Square towers with parapets stand at the northeast and southeast corners, trimmed with stone bands. Windows have stone lintels and sills, and the double equipment entry and main door are framed by tapered stone posts and lintels. A stone string course marks the second floor, double narrow windows light the gable, and large stone chimneys match the other decoration. The builder was C. N. Biehl. The building replaced an earlier brick engine house on the same site, in place by 1891, and became the city's fire fighting headquarters in 1913, two years before the present structure was completed. It is described as Sandusky's last remaining limestone fire station still in use. It sits on a corner in a commercial and factory district near the waterfront, and its exterior is in excellent condition.","period_of_significance":"1915","architect_builder":"C. N.
