Its entry has a recessed, paneled door flanked by fluted pilasters, sidelights and a fan light with tracery. A portico supported by two stone columns and two pilasters covers the entrance, and the roof carries stone battlements and four stone chimneys. Windows are mostly six over six. A wing was added to the south wall in 1881. The house was the last home of Eleutheros Cooke, Sandusky's first lawyer, who died there in 1864. He was the father of Jay Cooke, the Civil War financier, who visited the house on his honeymoon. Cooke also helped found the Firelands Historical Society in Norwalk. After Mrs. Cooke died in 1878, the house was moved from its downtown site and rebuilt here. A half-circle drive, lawns and shade trees surround it, and ivy on the walls was planted in 1890.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is listed as excellent for both interior and exterior; the house is in use as a dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.191173-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/82001389.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001389/929d900ed6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001389/929d900ed6-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Eleutheros_Cooke_House_at_1415_Columbus.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Eleutheros_Cooke_House_at_1415_Columbus.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71984866","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eleutheros_Cooke_House_(1415_Columbus_Avenue,_Sandusky,_Ohio)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5359665"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/erie-county/cooke-eleutheros-house-82001389/"}
