It also represents a bank that played a part in the community's development for about 100 years. The reviewer recommended Criterion C and found the justification under Criterion A poor.","narrative":"Built around 1922 at 115 E. Washington Row in Sandusky's commercial district, this four-story brick building with sandstone wall treatment was constructed as a bank with offices. It sits on a corner across from Washington Park. Its Beaux Arts design includes a red tile mansard roof with an attic story, dentils and brackets, monumental fluted columns with foliated tops at the front, and matching fluted pilasters on the south side. Carved stone cornucopias bearing the Commercial Bank shield mark the double-door entry, and iron grillwork covers the first-floor side windows. The building is described as the only Beaux Arts style building in Sandusky. The bank behind it began as the Moss Bank about 1850, became the First National Bank in 1863, and merged with the Second National Bank in 1903 to form the Commercial Banking Co. That firm failed in the early 1930s, and the Western Security Bank occupied the building until the 1970s. It is now a church, and its condition is recorded as excellent.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Beaux Arts","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Now used as a church; interior and exterior condition both listed as excellent.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.592242-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/82001386.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001386/1b1a4a683e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001386/1b1a4a683e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Antony-22","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Commercial_Banking_%26_Trust_Company_Sandusky_2023a.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Antony-22</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Commercial_Banking_%26_Trust_Company_Sandusky_2023a.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71984862","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137771701"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/erie-county/commercial-banking-and-trust-co-82001386/"}
