The railroad acquired the land in 1838. George Wallace, a railroad superintendent, purchased the house in 1848. In 1912 it passed to Joseph Bates, whose family played key roles in two of the city's window glass companies. The building has a symmetrical vernacular design with rock-faced ashlar walls, a gable roof, and a centered entrance framed by window lights. Upper window sashes were changed from the original six-over-six panes in the early twentieth century, and the porch with squared posts dates from the same period. Several additions stand at the rear. A converted barn serves as a garage and workshop, and the house sits beside another railroad-built house. The nearby railroad buildings are gone. It is now divided into three apartments.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Mad River & Lake Erie Railroad (builder)","architectural_style":"Vernacular","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Used as three apartments; interior and exterior condition reported as very good.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.814954-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/82001376.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001376/7ff6591e29-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001376/7ff6591e29-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bates-Cockrem_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bates-Cockrem_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71985030","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137771153"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/erie-county/bates-cockrem-house-82001376/"}
