It is valued for its architecture and as a record of the lifestyle of America's early twentieth century millionaires. Its unique features reflect the tastes of its builder, financier and philanthropist William Boyce Thompson.","narrative":"Perched on a hill above the Hudson River in northwest Yonkers, this limestone country house was completed in 1912 for William Boyce Thompson, a mining engineer, financier and philanthropist. The architects were Carrere and Hastings, the same firm then working on Henry Frick's Fifth Avenue mansion. The house is a Renaissance Revival design with a seven-bay east front, a Palladian arcade on the garden side, loggias, and a sixteenth-century Italian church facade built into its north wall. Inside are walnut and oak paneling, coffered ceilings, imported fireplaces, a three-story stairhall and an indoor swimming pool. Landscaping by the same architects includes a walled classical garden and a theater replica. It is one of few early twentieth century estates in Yonkers to survive largely intact, and the only local country house by this firm. After Thompson's widow died in 1950, the property passed to the Archbishopric of New York and later became part of a college, which continues to use it.","period_of_significance":"1900- (specific date 1912)","architect_builder":"Carrere & Hastings","architectural_style":"Renaissance Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied and in good condition; used by a college as a library, faculty residence, meeting rooms and classrooms, with the main floor retaining much of its original furnishings.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.3144-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/82001277.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001277/eb4142b9fa-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001277/eb4142b9fa-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WB_Thompson_Mansion,_Yonkers,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WB_Thompson_Mansion,_Yonkers,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75323261","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W._B._Thompson_Mansion","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7945348"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/thompson-w-b-mansion-82001277/"}
