Built c. 1923-24 by Terry & Tench Construction Co. and Carey Construction Co.","why_significant":"The road is described as one of the most picturesque in the Hudson Valley and, with the Storm King Highway, a combination unequalled in the state. It is significant for its engineering and its role in regional transportation history, and it has kept its original condition. The toll house is a distinctive type in the survey area and is tied to the bridge's construction and operation.","narrative":"Bear Mountain Bridge Road is a three-mile, two-lane scenic highway that winds up and down the south face of Anthony's Nose, between the Bear Mountain Bridge and Peekskill. A 1922 act of the state legislature required the company building the bridge, a Harriman family enterprise, to construct the road as well. Work began in May 1923, took seven months, and the road opened on Thanksgiving Day 1924. It was run as a toll road until the state took it over and ended the toll. A low rubble wall, built from rock excavated during construction, lines the road and offers river and mountain views. Near the southern end stands a one-story stuccoed Tudor-style toll house with a slate gable roof and a half-timbered bay for collecting tolls. Although deteriorated, it keeps most of its original features. The road is valued for its engineering, its scenic detailing and its unaltered condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; builders Terry & Tench Construction Co. and Carey Construction Co.","architectural_style":"Simple Tudor style (toll house)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Road listed as in good condition; the toll house is deteriorated and threatened by vandalism.
