The design is attributed to Ralph Adams Cram, which would place it at the start of his career.","narrative":"Built in 1882 for William H. Osborn of the nearby Wing & Wing estate, The Birches is a Gothic-style residence in Garrison, Putnam County. Its first story is random coursed, dressed stone, with a frame upper story under a gambrel roof. A projecting shingled pavilion on the west facade has half-timber trim, a louvered gable with king post and pendant, and exposed rafters. Arched windows and doorways and a bay with a cross-braced balcony add to the Gothic character. A one-story frame carriage house and garage stands to the east. The house became known as the Honeymoon Cottage because three of Osborn's sons each lived there after marrying, while their own estates were under construction. It is considered an intact High Victorian Gothic example, unique in the Hudson Highlands survey area, and its design is attributed to Ralph Adams Cram. It also relates closely to the adjacent Castle Rock and shares the rough stone found on other Osborn houses.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect: Ralph Adams Cram (attributed); builder unknown","architectural_style":"High Victorian Gothic (picturesque Gothic cottage)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still used as a residence, in good condition, with no known threats; minor kitchen alterations since 1976.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.62898-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/82001259.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001259/1aae1605d5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001259/1aae1605d5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Birches,_Garrison,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Birches,_Garrison,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314373","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Birches_(Garrison,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7718049"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/putnam-county/birches-the-82001259/"}
