It represents the work of a master architect and embodies the characteristics of a building type identifiable with the Hudson Valley. Built in 1854 for William Moore, a New York City importer, and his wife Margaret Philipse, it was designed by architect Richard Upjohn on land that was once part of the Philipse Patent of 1697. The slate roof has gabled dormers, an end chimney, and paired or single windows with drip moldings. A columned porch runs along the west and south sides, and an oriel window with a cutwork balcony projects from the west front. The family used it as a summer residence until Malcolm Gordon bought it in 1927 for a private boarding school. Additions followed in 1931, 1956, and later, though the original house was changed little apart from a 1966 kitchen extension. A stucco stable, carriage shed, and ice house, probably built around 1890, remain. The property is valued as an important Gothic Revival work by a noted architect.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect: Richard Upjohn; builder unknown","architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"In use as a private school (Malcolm Gordon School); condition listed as good.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.57497-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/82001258.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001258/19d9799ade-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001258/19d9799ade-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Woodlawn,_Garrison,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Woodlawn,_Garrison,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314377","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodlawn_(Garrison,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8032995"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/putnam-county/woodlawn-82001258/"}
