The main block was built in 1852-53 to designs by Richard Upjohn for Henry White Belcher, who owned the Garrison and West Point Ferry Company. Later in the 19th century Hamilton Fish II, an attorney and politician, owned the estate, and the additions and outbuildings date from that period. The two-story house has a low hipped roof, a projecting gabled central bay, arched doors and windows, and sandstone moldings. A Shingle style addition, about as large as the original house, was added later. The carriage house, built around 1880, is in the Colonial Revival style and has crossed gambrel roofs. Rock Lawn is regarded as one of the area's most important estate buildings and as the only Italian Villa attributed to Upjohn in the Hudson Highlands.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Richard Upjohn (architect, main house); builder unknown","architectural_style":"Italian Villa (main house); Shingle style addition; Colonial Revival carriage house","criteria":[],"status_note":"Used as a residence, as it was originally; condition listed as good, with the original site retained.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.88368-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/82001254.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001254/28cbf98867-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001254/28cbf98867-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rock_Lawn_front_facade_closeup.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rock_Lawn_front_facade_closeup.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314365","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_Lawn_and_Carriage_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7354548"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/putnam-county/rock-lawn-and-carriage-house-82001254/"}
