It represents the vernacular housing that developed in populated areas of the Hudson Highlands. It retains integrity of location, design, materials, feeling and association.","narrative":"This small frame house at 328 Main Street in Nelsonville, Putnam County, dates to about 1840. It is a 1½-story building on a stone basement, with a two-room plan and a shed-roofed addition on the north side. Doors and windows have plain sills and lintels, and the panelled main door on the south facade is flanked by two 6/6 windows. A porch with bracketed piers and an exterior cellar door on the west were added later in the 19th century. The house first appears on an 1867 map as the property of E. Hustis, though its appearance suggests an earlier date. It was listed as an intact example of mid-19th-century worker housing in Nelsonville, an early workers' community. Its simple design reflects its practical purpose, and it represents the vernacular houses built in the populated parts of the Hudson Highlands. The house remains a residence, with a stream running behind it and woodland to the north.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular worker housing, mid-19th century","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still used as a residence, as it was originally; condition is listed as fair, with no known threats.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.308365-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/82001248.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001248/e4164793cf-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001248/e4164793cf-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hustis_House,_Nelsonville,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hustis_House,_Nelsonville,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314398","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hustis_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5949953"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/putnam-county/hustis-house-82001248/"}
