Its original section dates to 1908, when it replaced an older schoolhouse that had been built in 1793 on church property and moved across the road in 1866. The west facade has a projecting cross-gabled center bay with a half-timbered pediment, diamond-paned casement windows and bracketed woodwork. A gable-roofed porch over the double door shows heavy timbered English detailing. The hipped roof has exposed rafters and two interior chimneys, and the windows have cut stone sills. The rustic timbering and stone match the character of nearby St. Philip's Church. The school is regarded as a distinctive example of Arts and Crafts educational architecture in the Hudson Highlands and the only school singled out in the area's survey. Two brick additions from the 1960s on the south and east are not considered historic. The building still serves as a school.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Arts and Crafts (rustic stone with heavy timbered English style detailing)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still used as a school; condition listed as fair, with two non-contributing 1960s additions.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.041455-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/82001244.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001244/660c57cbe7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001244/660c57cbe7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Anita Prentice","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gufshistoricdoor.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Anita Prentice</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gufshistoricdoor.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314396","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garrison_Union_Free_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5524062"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/putnam-county/garrison-union-free-school-82001244/"}
