It keeps all of its original detailing and storefront configuration, especially a pressed sheet metal entablature with swag and fleur-de-lis decoration. It is also tied to James Dykman, a prominent Philipstown citizen.","narrative":"Built around 1890 at 255 Main Street in Nelsonville, this one-story wood-frame building was designed as a commercial storefront. It has four bays across its north facade, recessed double entrance doors, a single-light transom and surviving panelled sections of the original store front. Wood-framed plate glass windows are more recent, and an overhead garage door replaced an original service door in the western bay. Its most notable feature is a bracketed sheet metal entablature with pressed swag and fleur-de-lis decoration on the fascia and pilaster capitals. A Sanborn map of 1912 shows it owned by James Dykman and operated as a grocery and feed store. Dykman was a prominent Philipstown citizen who served on the coroner's jury investigating the Garrison train wreck of 1897. The survey identified the building as one of the most significant commercial properties in its area because it retains its original detailing and storefront layout. It now houses an antique maps and prints shop.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late 19th century commercial architecture","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition rated good; present use is an antique maps and prints shop; no threats known; remains on its original site.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.236626-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/82001238.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001238/a3e7f9d770-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001238/a3e7f9d770-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:JY_Dykman_Store.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:JY_Dykman_Store.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314390","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._Y._Dykman_Store","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6107498"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/putnam-county/dykman-j-y-store-82001238/"}
