Dykman, also known as The Country Store.","why_significant":"The building is described as the most elaborately decorated commercial structure in Nelsonville. It is also a significant example of a mid-19th century ornamented roof design, showing the characteristics of its type, period and method of construction. It appears on the 1867 Beers Map under Dykman's ownership.","narrative":"Standing at 289 Main Street in Nelsonville, this two-story brick building dates to about 1860 and has served as both a store and housing. Its gable end faces the street, and a heavy modillioned cornice with decorative ends separates the commercial ground floor from the upper story. Two-over-two windows on the upper levels have stone lintels and sills, and crosses are set into the brick walls. Elaborate vergeboards carry scrolls and cross bracing, and an oriel window sits under the cross gable on the west facade. J.Y. Dykman is shown as owner on the 1867 Beers Map, and a fading painted flour and feed sign on the west wall still records his ownership. By 1912 a Mr. Jaycox used it as a general store. A two-story frame addition was added at the rear in the 1950s, and the storefront has been altered. It is regarded as the most ornamented commercial structure in the village.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th century commercial architecture","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still commercial with residential units; condition rated fair, with a storefront altered and a rear frame addition built in the 1950s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.626365-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/82001237.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001237/01d032b539-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001237/01d032b539-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:JY_Dykman_Flour_and_Feed_Store.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:JY_Dykman_Flour_and_Feed_Store.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314388","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._Y._Dykman_Flour_and_Feed_Store","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6107497"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/putnam-county/dykman-j-y-flour-and-feed-store-82001237/"}
