It was built for Major General Charles Roe, who donated a lake, park and playground to the community. The exterior remains largely intact, though the interior has been heavily altered and a large modern addition was built.","narrative":"Pine Terrace is a brick mansion on Main Street in Highland Falls, facing north with the Hudson River to its east and open land to the south and west. Dated 1865 on its facade, it has a slate mansard roof, a wooden bracketed cornice and a square main block with a central three-story pavilion topped by a steeply hipped roof and dormer. The entrance sits in the tower, concealed by a frame veranda and porte-cochere with quatrefoil decoration. It was built for Major General Charles Roe, who helped fund the rectory of the Church of the Holy Innocents and gave Highland Falls a lake, park and playground. Historic maps from 1875 and 1891 show the Roe family holding the property, the latter naming it Pine Terrace. It is regarded as the village's most important Second Empire building and an early Hudson Valley example of the style. A large modern apartment addition and extensive interior changes have altered it, but the exterior retains much original detailing.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect and builder unknown; owner Major General Charles Roe","architectural_style":"Second Empire","criteria":[],"status_note":"In use as apartments; condition fair; large mid-20th-century additions to the west and south; interior extensively altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.038844-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/82001224.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001224/0d5ce664bb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001224/0d5ce664bb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D.","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D., CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PINE_TERRACE,_HIGHLAND_FALLS,_ORANGE_COUNTY,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314179","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pine_Terrace","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7195370"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/pine-terrace-82001224/"}
