It also housed the first church congregation incorporated in Highland Falls (1830) and was built under the Rev. Edward Payson Roe, later a noted novelist.","narrative":"Blue granite forms the walls of this church at 140 Main Street in Highland Falls. Frederick Clarke Withers designed it in 1868. The gable-roofed nave has a narthex at the east end, with a square tower on the south side that has a steeply pitched hipped roof, corbeled cornice and lancet windows. The entrance has recessed columns with foliated capitals and a pediment with a date panel, and a circular stained glass window sits in the east gable. Six pairs of lancet windows, divided by buttresses, line the north and south sides. The congregation was the first incorporated in Highland Falls, in 1830. The Reverend Edward Payson Roe, later a noted novelist, led it when the church was built, using money raised through lectures and donations. An earlier plan by Wycliff and Baldwin was paid for but never used. The building remains in original condition and is the only Withers work in the survey area.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect: Frederick Clarke Withers; builder unknown","architectural_style":"Romanesque; mid-19th-century ecclesiastical architecture","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a church; stated to remain in its original condition on its original site, with no known threats.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.37877-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/82001216.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001216/05d7a2fb85-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001216/05d7a2fb85-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:First_Presbyterian_Church_of_Highland_Falls,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:First_Presbyterian_Church_of_Highland_Falls,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314175","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Methodist_Church_of_the_Highlands","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7888254"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/first-presbyterian-church-of-highland-falls-82001216/"}
