The main house dates from about 1860, with a caretaker's cottage from about 1880 and a gate from about 1901.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the camp is significant in the history of Cornwall and the resort history of the Hudson Highlands. It is described as the only surviving example of a fresh air camp where less fortunate city children could enjoy country living. The nineteenth-century house and turn-of-the-century additions remain essentially intact.","narrative":"Camp Olmsted occupies a 22-acre site in Cornwall-on-Hudson, where a house of about 1860 first served as the Bay View House, a summer boarding house that helped Cornwall grow as a resort. In 1901 Mrs. Rhoda Olmsted of Hobart, N.Y., bought the property to create a country home for children, mothers and babies from city tenements. It served that purpose for more than 25 years and later became a Methodist retreat center and youth summer camp. The main house is a two-and-a-half-story clapboard building with gabled wall dormers, vergeboards and finials. Early twentieth-century additions include an elaborate gazebo with fretwork, a two-story caretaker's residence and a large wooden entrance gate of eight pillars. A pool, changing house, assembly hall, shed and workshop also contribute, while three modern cottages do not. The camp is described as the last surviving fresh air camp among the many hotels, boarding houses and camps once found in the mountains above Cornwall.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"mid-19th century residential architecture","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still operates as a camp for city children; condition rated fair, with no known threats.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.299322-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/82001212.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001212/6cfbcd3d3b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001212/6cfbcd3d3b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Camp_Olmsted_gate.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Camp_Olmsted_gate.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314235","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camp_Olmsted_(New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5027470"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/camp-olmsted-82001212/"}
