They were built before the area was extensively developed and follow the Street Commissioners' plan of 1811. Their Italianate ornament is more commonly found on brick and stone buildings, and they remained largely unchanged as East 92nd Street grew up around them.","narrative":"Two wood-frame Italianate houses at 120 and 122 East 92nd Street, in Manhattan's Yorkville area, survive from a time when this part of the city was still semi-rural. Each is three stories high, with a porch with open-work columns, clapboard walls, shuttered windows and a bracketed cornice. Both sit back from the street behind planted yards enclosed by simple iron fences. The form gives 1859 for one house and 1871 for the other, and the builder is unknown. The interiors keep original staircases with trumpet-turned balustrades, along with moldings and marble fireplaces. No. 122 gained a penthouse, an enclosed alleyway and a garden room with a greenhouse roof in 1927. The houses are significant as rare survivors of the 1860s and 1870s on the Upper East Side. They were laid out to fit the 1811 street grid, which helped them endure while neighboring farmhouses were replaced by brick and stone rowhouses. Their Italianate ornament and proportions remain largely intact.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition and altered; occupied as private residences. 122 East 92nd Street received a 1927 penthouse, an enclosed alleyway addition and a garden room.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.306811-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/82001195.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001195/c1ccc0cfcd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001195/c1ccc0cfcd-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Americasroof","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nyc-120e92.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Americasroof</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nyc-120e92.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75319622","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/120_and_122_East_92nd_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17994851"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/manhattan/houses-at-120-and-122-east-92nd-street-82001195/"}
