Its granite Arts and Crafts influenced house was built in 1904-05 to designs by Barney and Chapman of New York City.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an excellent example of a picturesque eclectic Thousand Island summer residence. It is believed to be the only artificial island in the river with a house built on it, created from four shoals. It also reflects the careful planning and craftsmanship given to wealthy summer homes at the turn of the century.","narrative":"Longue Vue Island is a summer estate built on a half-acre artificial island in the St. Lawrence River, about one hundred yards from the southern shore near Alexandria Bay. New York City lumber dealer Hudson P. Rose bought four small shoals and hired the firm of Barney and Chapman to design a house and create the island. Local stone masons built the three-story residence from locally quarried granite carried to the site by barge. The island was then formed by filling behind a granite wall. The house has a multi-gabled roof with broad eaves, exposed carved rafter ends, a three-story tower and a recessed entrance beneath a massive stone arch. A two-story granite boathouse stands to the east. The estate was listed as a rare, possibly unique artificial island residence and as a well-preserved example of the elaborate summer homes built by wealthy New Yorkers in the Thousand Islands. It remains occupied and well maintained.","period_of_significance":"1904-05","architect_builder":"Barney and Chapman, New York City","architectural_style":"Arts and Crafts influenced; picturesque eclectic Thousand Island summer residence","criteria":[],"status_note":"Presently occupied and excellently maintained; in excellent condition, with a back porch added in 1920 and several porches enclosed in the 1950s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.55531-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/82001176.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001176/4aa75acdee-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001176/4aa75acdee-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Farmer88 at English Wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Longue_Vue_Island_Postcard.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Farmer88 at English Wikipedia</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Longue_Vue_Island_Postcard.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318258","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longue_Vue_Island","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6674378"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/jefferson-county/longue-vue-island-82001176/"}
