The buildings are representative local examples of nineteenth and early twentieth century architectural styles. They also reflect Batavia's prominence as county seat and transportation center in western New York.","narrative":"Five civic buildings and a Civil War monument form a compact government center in Batavia, the seat of Genesee County, New York. The oldest is the limestone Greek Revival courthouse of 1841-43, which replaced an 1802 courthouse designed by Joseph Ellicott. Next is the Italianate Brisbane Mansion of 1853, bought by the city in 1917 and adapted as City Hall. The red Medina sandstone Sheriff's Office and Jail of 1902-03, with its turrets, was designed by William J. Beardsley. The 1919 Post Office and the 1926-27 County Building #1 represent late Classical Revival design. A granite Soldier's Monument of 1919, topped by a bronze statue of General Upton, honors county men who served in the Civil War and later conflicts. Together the buildings show the growth of a town founded in 1802 by the Holland Land Company's agent and made county seat, and they still serve city, county and federal government functions.","period_of_significance":"1843-1926","architect_builder":"Various; includes William J.
