Its glazed terra cotta tile facade is unique in the city, where classical buildings usually have stone exteriors. It also commemorates the local YMCA, which grew from a Young Men's Christian Union organized in 1856.","narrative":"Built in 1908 at 58 Market Street in Poughkeepsie, this three-story, five-bay building served as a Young Men's Christian Association, a successor to the Young Men's Christian Union organized in 1856. Jackson and Rosencrans of New York City designed it. The front is faced in glazed terra cotta with stone columns, a slate hipped roof, a decorative entablature, and a balustrade centered on an ornate cartouche. The first story has large arched windows with keystones and engaged columns, and two windows carry iron balconies. Inside, dark-stained woodwork, sliding double doors, stairways and brick fireplaces survive. The building was listed because it is a distinctive example of early-20th-century institutional design and one of a small group of classical revival buildings in the city. Its terra cotta tile construction is unique in Poughkeepsie, where comparable classical buildings are faced in stone. William W. Smith of the Smith Bros. cough drop firm was among the YMCA's chief benefactors. The building was vacant when recorded in 1980.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Jackson and Rosencrans of New York City (architect)","architectural_style":"Renaissance Revival II","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as vacant on the inventory form; condition rated fair, with a rear brick addition noted as the major alteration.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.616249-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/82001171.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001171/9cfedda0e5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001171/9cfedda0e5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Poughkeepsie_YMCA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Poughkeepsie_YMCA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312552","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Poughkeepsie_YMCA","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7084776"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/dutchess-county/young-mens-christian-association-82001171/"}
