Its distinctive corbelling, sunflower tiles and intact interiors add to its importance. Architect Corydon Wheeler also solved the challenge of an unusual triangular lot.","narrative":"Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church and its adjoining rectory occupy a triangular lot where South Hamilton Street meets Hooker Avenue in Poughkeepsie. Dedicated in 1892, the brick church is in the Romanesque Revival style, while the rectory is Queen Anne. Poughkeepsie architect Corydon Wheeler, who also designed the rear wing of the Vassar-Warner Home, planned both. The church has a massive hexagonal tower with a matching spire, castellated detailing, brick corbelling, arched belfry openings and three-stage buttresses. Sunflower tiles are among its distinctive features. The rectory rises two and a half stories under a steeply pitched roof of many levels, with an ornate semicircular vergeboard, shingled porches and turned columns. The nomination describes the complex as one of the two best Romanesque Revival churches in the city and as an intact example of late nineteenth-century ecclesiastical design. Its interiors remain largely intact, and later additions from 1962 and 1967 are hidden from the main street views. The church is still in use.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Corydon Wheeler of Poughkeepsie (architect)","architectural_style":"Romanesque Revival (church) and Queen Anne (rectory)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still used as a church; condition described as good; additions built in 1962 and 1967 are not visible from Hooker Avenue or Trinity Square.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.328375-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/82001168.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312548","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trinity_Methodist_Episcopal_Church_and_Rectory_(Poughkeepsie,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7842913"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/dutchess-county/trinity-methodist-episcopal-church-and-rectory-82001168/"}
