It is also considered the city's oldest extant factory building, with a bracketed cornice and 12/12 windows dating to the early to mid-nineteenth century.","narrative":"Pelton Mill, at 110 Mill Street in Poughkeepsie, is a 4½-story masonry factory with a gable end facing the street and stone foundations stepping down toward the Fallkill Creek. Its earliest portion dates to about 1834, and it was rebuilt after a fire in 1854. C. M. Pelton rented the building in 1837, and by 1850 it served as the Pelton factory, producing ingrain carpeting and pins. An 1887 map records weaving, carding, spinning and pin manufacturing there. By 1895 the Pelton operation had left and the Poughkeepsie Rod Company used the building. The front shows a projecting cornice with a stepped brick frieze, brackets with pendants, an arched gable window and stone lintels and sills. Inside are hand-hewn beams and early flooring. The building is valued for its place in Poughkeepsie's manufacturing history and as the city's oldest surviving factory. Later additions include an elevator shaft and southwest corner extensions, and it now holds offices and storage.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Presently used for offices and storage; condition rated fair, with no threats known.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.125134-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/82001156.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001156/c16702fbbc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001156/c16702fbbc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pksherpa","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pelton_Mill_110_Mill_St_Poughkeepsie_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pksherpa</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pelton_Mill_110_Mill_St_Poughkeepsie_NY.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"72000834","name":"Mill Street-North Clover Street Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/mill-street-north-clover-street-historic-district-72000834/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312723","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pelton_Mill","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7161760"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/dutchess-county/pelton-mill-82001156/"}
