Lloyd of Poughkeepsie.","why_significant":"It is the only surviving fire house of the six engine companies that operated in Poughkeepsie. The nomination calls it an excellent example of the Gothic Revival II style, popular for public buildings around 1900. It also shows the architect's creativity in designing early twentieth-century functional buildings, alongside his Lady Washington Hose Company building.","narrative":"Built in 1909 at 8 North Hamilton Street in Poughkeepsie, this brick fire house was designed by local architect Percival M. Lloyd for the Niagara Engine Company. The company was organized in 1810 but did not take the Niagara name until 1847. Of the six engine companies that once served the city, this is the only house that remains. The three-story facade has a projecting cornice with alternating large and small brackets and a brick frieze with blue squares spelling NIAGARA. A second-story bay has a castellated top and diamond-paned lights, and stone lintels with drip moldings, some in Gothic arch form, mark the openings. A stone belt course separates the lower stories, and a plaque reads 1810 NIAGARA 1909. Inside, a brass pole and tiled walls and floors survive. The building is a good example of Gothic Revival II civic design and contrasts with the simpler O.H. Booth Hose Company building by William J. Beardsley. It is now used as an ambulance garage.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Percival M.
