Company K left from here for the Spanish-American War, and other companies for both World Wars. It is an outstanding member of a group of Mid-Hudson Valley and New York State armories and of Romanesque Revival buildings in Poughkeepsie. Its interior survives in pristine period condition.","narrative":"Built in 1891, the New York State Armory at 61-65 Market Street in Poughkeepsie is a massive brick and rusticated sandstone building with the proportions of a fortress. State architect Isaac G. Perry designed it and William O'Riley built it. The facade rises two and a half stories above a stone raised basement, with a steeply pitched hipped roof, two three-story conical-roofed towers with lancet windows, and a central pediment decorated with diamond patterns of light and dark stone. A massive four-story tower stands at the rear. Inside, the building retains an oak double stairway, oak lockers and floors, and original pressed metal ceilings and lighting fixtures. Company K left from here for the Spanish-American War, and later companies departed for both World Wars. The hall also hosted basketball tournaments, victory balls and other civic events. It is listed as a strong example of Richardsonian Romanesque design and as part of a notable group of Hudson Valley armories. It remains in use as an armory.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Hon. Issac G. Perry (N.Y.
