Moore.","why_significant":"The house follows a Gustav Stickley plan published in The Craftsman in November 1909, reflecting the arts and crafts movement. It was the first hollow-tile building erected in Poughkeepsie. It is also the earliest Poughkeepsie example of a Stickley-designed house.","narrative":"Built in 1910 at 37 Adriance Avenue, this Bungalow-style house was commissioned by Samuel J. Moore, a local boot and shoe merchant, and designed by Poughkeepsie architect DuBois Carpenter. Carpenter adapted a Gustav Stickley plan published in The Craftsman in November 1909, but chose hollow-tile construction rather than the rived shingles Stickley specified. The Poughkeepsie Engineering and Contracting Company, which specialized in that type of work, probably carried out the building. The house is a story and a half, with stucco walls, a slate roof, a cobblestone chimney, and a broad porch under a sweeping roof carried on massive stone piers. Inside are dark-stained oak woodwork, a cobblestone fireplace and Stickley hardware, and the structure sits on a rock outcropping visible in the basement. It was the first hollow-tile building in Poughkeepsie and the city's earliest Stickley-designed house, which accounts for its importance locally. It remains a residence in good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect: DuBois Carpenter of Poughkeepsie; Builder: Poughkeepsie Engineering & Contracting Co.
