The business began as a company formed in 1845 and took its present name in 1869, when Edmund P. Platt bought an interest. It moved to 332 Main in 1874 and expanded through the early twentieth century. The complex includes a four-story building at 332-334 Main dating from about 1867, a three-story furniture annex at 12-16 Academy Street designed by Percival M. Lloyd about 1910, and a five-story building at 336-346 Main designed by Edward C. Smith and completed in 1922-23. The newest building has a molded cornice with small lion's heads, paired and triple windows, and a stone first story. The Academy Street annex keeps its original storefront and an interior with walnut office partitions, stained-glass windows and iron stairways. The store advertised 30 individual shops under one roof and 175 clerks, and it is valued as a Classical Revival landmark of regional commerce.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"336-346 Main: Edward C.
