Its tent roofs, mix of board and batten with clapboards, pierced balcony railings and stick-style porch made it unique in Poughkeepsie and place it among a handful of Swiss-style buildings in the Mid-Hudson Valley. Sophisticated interior woodwork adds to its integrity as a period example.","narrative":"Built around 1885 at 30 Hooker Avenue in Poughkeepsie, this two-and-a-half story frame house is an unusually elaborate example of Swiss-style design. The lot appeared under the name G. Carson on an 1880 city map, but Carson lived nearby and was probably the developer. The first listed occupant, in 1885, was Max Hershkind, a clerk at a Main Street commercial house. The house has a steeply pitched roof, a three-sided bay with a conical roof cut in V shapes, undulating bargeboards with stylized leaf cut-outs, and wall surfaces that combine clapboard with board and batten. Pierced balcony railings and a stick-style front porch add to the ornament, and the front door carries molding that repeats the bargeboard motifs. It was considered unique in Poughkeepsie and one of only a handful of Swiss-style buildings in the Mid-Hudson Valley. Fine interior woodwork supports its value as a period example. It remains a residence in good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Swiss style, with stick-style porch","criteria":[],"status_note":"Used as a residence, as originally; condition rated good; no major alterations listed.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.883612-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/82001144.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001144/8fccc83cb9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001144/8fccc83cb9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hershkind_House,_Poughkeepsie_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hershkind_House,_Poughkeepsie_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312580","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hershkind_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14706356"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/dutchess-county/hershkind-house-82001144/"}
