Withers of New York City.","why_significant":"The house was built for local judge and historian Frank Hasbrouck and is described as the most distinguished Romanesque structure in Poughkeepsie. Houses on this massive a scale are rare for a city of its size. It is one of a group of Withers-designed buildings in the Poughkeepsie and Mid-Hudson area, and its largely intact interior adds to its integrity.","narrative":"Built in 1885 at 75-77 Market Street in Poughkeepsie, this brick house was designed by New York architect Frederick C. Withers for local judge and historian Frank Hasbrouck. Rising 2½ stories above a rock-faced raised basement, it is a symmetrical Romanesque design with an arcaded porch, a vine-twisted column with a Corinthian capital, brownstone belt courses, an oriel window, round-arched windows, a pentagonal dormer and parapeted gable ends. Houses of this scale were uncommon in a city the size of Poughkeepsie and were mostly found in large metropolitan areas or in military and prison housing. It is considered the finest Romanesque building in the city and one of several Withers works in the Mid-Hudson Valley. Inside, a massive brick chimney and fireplace, oak woodwork and glazed tiles survive. The building has been adapted successfully for professional offices and remains in good condition, with only a small rear addition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Frederick C.
