Its symmetrical plan, dressed stone facade, corbeled chimneys and Federal detailing set it apart from its surroundings. The gabled dormers appear to show French influence.","narrative":"Built around 1828, this Federal Style house at 24-26 Cornelia Street in Plattsburgh combines stone and brick construction on a stone foundation. The front facade is dressed stone, with two corbeled stone chimneys, a molded cornice with dentils, returns, and a central door framed by paneled sidelights, fluted pilasters and a segmental arch lintel. Unusual gabled dormers and quarter-round windows in the gable ends add to its character, and the dormers appear to reflect French influence. Paul Marshall, a dry goods dealer, was listed as owner in the late 1850s or early 1860s, and the building was probably constructed by him after he arrived in Plattsburgh. Later owners included a harness maker and J. L. Carter. The house is valued as one of the few surviving Federal buildings in the city, standing out among its mostly commercial and residential neighbors. Changes include a modern gable roof and an added half storey on the east brick wing.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Builder: probably Paul Marshall","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in good condition and used as a residence; alterations include a modern gable roof and an extra half storey on the east brick wing.
