The academy itself was founded in 1860, and earlier maps from 1869 and 1877 show a different building in a slightly different spot. In 1896 the New York State Board of Regents granted the Gray Nuns an absolute charter for the school. The building held study halls, classrooms, sleeping apartments and recreation halls for 300 pupils. It is a 2-1/2 storey cruciform structure on a raised stone foundation, with stone lug sills and lintels, quoined corners, a rounded two-storey bay and five gable dormers with moulded cornices, sunbursts and pediments. The central door has decorative brackets and etched sidelights. It is considered an important and monumental example of the mansard style locally, shows French influence in its dormers, and remains the city's most significant 19th century academic structure.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Builder: Gray Nuns of Ottawa, Canada","architectural_style":"Mansard style","criteria":[],"status_note":"Originally a school; the inventory form lists the present use as a nun's residence, with condition rated fair and no threats known.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.560026-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/82001103.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001103/9987040e7f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/82001103/9987040e7f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Mwanner","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:D%27Youville_Academy,_Plattsburgh,_New_York.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Mwanner</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:D%27Youville_Academy,_Plattsburgh,_New_York.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312333","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%27Youville_Academy","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5203186"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/clinton-county/dyouville-academy-82001103/"}
