It is a 1 1/2-story rectangular building on a stone foundation, with its gable end facing the street, a plain cornice, corbeled chimneys and heavy stone lintels over the windows and doors. Two clapboard extensions were added at the rear in the early 20th century, and the facade windows were changed in the 1970s. John B. Carpenter is listed as a farmer in 1892 and later appears in directories as a truckman. Although architecturally simple, the house is one of the few surviving stone structures in Plattsburgh and the only example of this regional domestic type within the present city limits. It represents a vernacular farmhouse of the first half of the nineteenth century and remains standing amid later suburban development. It is still used as a residence.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"John B.
